Here is what you need to know about migrating your Jira Server instance with Canned Responses Pro Templates for Jira to Jira Cloud.

1. Your templates will be migrated with Jira

Work in progress

Automatic migration is not available yet – it is in active development with a planned release date of .

Your Canned Responses' templates will be migrated automatically along with Jira data if you follow Atlassian's Cloud migration guide. Canned Responses add-on will appear in Jira Cloud Migration Assistant to allow a smooth data transition.

2. You may need a browser extension

We recommend using a dedicated browser extension for the best experience with Canned Responses. Though it's not mandatory.

  • Extension makes it possible to use templates directly from Jira's native text fields so the user doesn't even notice that templates are served by Canned Responses Pro Templates for Jira.
  • Canned Responses can be used without extension but templates are available through a separate comment box then.

Such differences are dictated by current limitations of Jira Cloud platform – it's impossible to integrate with Jira's native fields through API at the moment.

Please check short videos provided below to understand the described differences:

Jira Server
Canned Responses are embedded directly into Jira's comment field

Jira Cloud with Extension

Canned Responses are embedded directly into Jira's comment field – just like in Jira Server

Jira Cloud

Canned Responses are available through a separate comment box

What you might want to do:

(lightbulb) Let the users in your organization know that they can use Chrome browser with a dedicated extension for the best experience with Canned Responses.

Extensions for other browsers

Currently Canned Responses extension is available for Chrome browser only, but we plan adding support of other browsers.
See our public feature request to track the progress:

CT-521 - Getting issue details... STATUS

CT-456 - Getting issue details... STATUS

Please let us know which browsers are essential for your organization so we can prioritize the work of delivering extensions for them.

3. The formatting of templates may differ

Your templates formatting have to be checked for compatibility depending on your Jira Cloud instance configuration:

Jira ServerJira Server uses old Jira issue view that comes with legacy text formatting.
Your current templates are most probably written in old wiki syntax.
Jira CloudJira Cloud supports new Jira issue view by default – with new text formatting.
Templates should preferably be written in new markdown syntax.

Check the syntax comparison to understand formatting differences better.

What you might want to do:

(lightbulb) Check if your migrated templates are rendered properly on your new Jira Cloud instance

(lightbulb) If formatting requires update – edit them following the new markdown syntax.

4. There are some differences in features

There are some minor differences in terms of user interaction and functionality, mostly in favor of Cloud solution:

(tick) Cloud version comes with interaction improvements - better templates search, folders navigation etc.

(tick) In Cloud, it is possible to star templates as favorite. That makes them available through shortcuts (non-extension version only)

(tick) There are additional Settings options available in Cloud – for example ability to define default template (non-extension version only)

(warning) Canned Responses in Cloud are currently only available for Comments field

We plan to enable Canned Responses for more fields in Jira Cloud.
You can observe feature requests for progress:

CT-498 - Getting issue details... STATUS

CT-499 - Getting issue details... STATUS

(warning) Autocomplete for inserting templates (accessed with $ shortcut) is available in Cloud for non-extension version only

(warning) Some editing options are limited, e.g. direct paste of images is not currently supported although it is possible to embed images with Jira syntax
